Mass. Program Aids American Indian Vets

AP) BEDFORD, Mass. - Army veteran Craig Cournoyer left behind his community of 400 people on a South Dakota reservation, moving thousands of miles to learn how to fix moldy, broken down ventilation systems.

With the nearest town 30 miles away, there is not enough skilled labor remaining among his fellow Yankton Sioux in Wagner, S.D. Any construction work puts a financial drain on the tribe, because members have to hire outside workers.

"There's lots of work out there, but nobody there is trained to do it," said Cournoyer, 47.

A program specifically designed for American Indian veterans aims to help ease that burden, by providing training in carpentry, ventilation, plumbing, electrical work and more at some of the nation's premier trade and craft schools in the Boston area.

They have more disposable income, but their primary economic challenge is still paying the mortgage and their primary income source is still salary rather than anything that would benefit from capital gains cuts. Let's face it, 150K just doesn't buy what it used to. :>

It's one of the few really smart moves that democrats have made to stick to an extremely broad definition of middle class when discussiong their tax policies, so as to include these folks in the "middle class tax relief" group rather than the "make the rich pay their share" group. And it obviously works. Especially when the republican focus on (less affluent) values voters forces them away from their traditional economic policies.

Some people, "high income people" who make six or seven figures, may have benefited from tax cuts.

Navigating the deluge of credit cards

In a country from which there are hundreds of credit cards to choose, picking one that best suits your financial needs and lifestyle is no easy task.

There are cards that offer rewards, cards that tout low interest rates and cards that have no annual fees.

Many of these credit card offers have been dropping into mailboxes recently. January is a busy month when it comes to applications sent out by credit card issuers. That's not surprising, given that many people who used their credit cards heavily in December for holiday shopping may be in the market for a new one.

"We've heard that from card issuers, and we've seen that in our business," said Bill Hardekopf, chief executive officer of Lowcards.com, a Web site that helps consumers compare credit cards.

Barksdale: Countdown to 75

On Feb. 2, Barksdale Air Force Base will turn 75 years old. Then as now, The Times covered the base and reported on the work being done to bring it into being. Look here each day through Feb. 3 for day-by-day glimpses of the reporting that led up to the dedication of what once was proudly hailed as the world's largest military airfield.

Read more of these original stories from the archives of The Times by clicking on the links at the right. Note that original typographical errors and the styles of the time, which may seem quaint today, have been retained. Some of these files are large and may take up to a minute to download even at high speed, but they are worth the wait.

Thought you'd like this one. At church a few weeks back, a couple renewed their wedding vows to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The preacher asked them where they were married. The groom replied "Saint So-and-sos. And a short time after our wedding the church burned down and the priest died." Without missing a beat my preacher said "Would you mind if we did this outside?"

I had the luck of being at the Packer game last Sunday. What a game and what a day! After spotting the Seahawks 14-points, the Packers looked like an absolutely unstoppable team. And when that snow fell down, it was like being inside a snow globe, you couldn't see the people who were sitting in the stands on the other side of the stadium. But it wasn't cold! In fact, I kept my gloves off for most of the game.
