Grisham's 'Appeal' Tackles Down-and-Dirty Politics

In his younger years, back when his hearing was better, Uncle Joe was rumored to also eavesdrop on his juries through a flimsy pine door he and he alone had selected and installed. But his listening days were over, and, as he had confided to no one but his wife, after the ordeal of this particular trial he might just hang up his old pistol once and for all. The strain of controlling justice was wearing him down.

He smiled and said, "That's great. I'll get the judge," as if the judge were somewhere in the bowels of the courthouse just waiting for a call from Uncle Joe. Instead, by custom, he found a clerk and passed along the wonderful news. It was truly exciting. The old courthouse had never seen a trial so large and so long. To end it with no decision at all would have been a shame.

McLeish hails Hampden heroics

The Scots took a massive step closer to qualifying for next summer's Euro 2008 finals with goals from Kenny Miller, Lee McCulloch and James McFadden at Hampden Park.

But the win came at a cost to McLeish, as McCulloch and substitute Garry O'Connor picked up bookings which will mean them missing Wednesday's match in Tbilisi.

With Paul Hartley and Gary Caldwell injured, the Scotland squad will be stretched to the limit.

Darren Fletcher, who has not played since he injured his knee in the 1-0 win over France in Paris last month, will return - but McLeish could be forced in to calling up extra players.

He said: "It was the best game we have played at Hampden since I've been here.

"It is a massive step towards qualifying - but I have mixed feelings because we have some walking wounded and we have suspensions.

October 2005 Archives

Last night I saw Sheryl Crow at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC. She sounded good -- classic Sheryl. Her new album, Wildflower, isn't as rockin' as her older stuff -- it's more laid-back, mellow, chilled-out tunes. The audience reflected the maturity of the album. It was definitely a 30-and-up set. There were a lot of families, which was interesting. Linda Wells, the editor-in-chief of Allure, sat right near me with her husband and her two sons. (My sister commented that both boys could use a haircut, but I liked their shaggy 'dos.) Another celeb sighting: comedian Gilbert Godfried, who sat directly behind me. He was wearing earplugs at a Sheryl Crow concert. I don't know exactly what he was expecting, but I guarantee that earplugs weren't necessary. Besides, with all the screaming he does during his stand-up you'd think he'd have trouble hearing in the first place.

Universal's American Gangster to be next big HD DVD exclusive

MS will want to cash in on the Wii's succes, as does sony, which requires for both the xbox 360 and the ps3 to become alot cheaper. if MS lowers the 360's price, sony can't stay too far behind. and the price difference between blu-ray stand alones and the PS3 can't become too great, since not everybody will buy a PS3 *just* for the movie functionality. so they drop in price as well.i'd not educate you on HD. however the average consumer cares balls about your education, the same with what you'd consider worth buying. personally, i'd buy blu-ray over HD-DVD any day, because of the added storage. if HVD comes out tomorrow i'd buy that over blu-ray. DRM and such, writables don't have it. and rootkits feel just as much at home on a HD-DVD as a blu-ray disk. it's not the manufacturer that decides that, it's the compagny that prints on those disks.

The Curse of Zog?

Won't Get Fooled Again? Zogby's poll right before the New Hampshire primary showed Obama with a 13 point lead. ... Zogby's poll for Saturday's South Carolina primary shows Obama with a 13 point lead. And falling. I'm just sayin' ... P.S.: Remember, a "Bradley effect" is possible among black voters as well as white voters. ...

Update--Would you lie to a robot? I would! Mark Blumenthal analyzes the diverging (but not all that much) S.C. polls, including the Clemson poll with its huge (36%) undecided result. He's skeptical of a Bradley Effect, noting that if voters lie to polltakers when they say they're going to vote for the black candidate, you 'd expect them to tell the truth to automated polls:

If the Bradley/Wilder effect is operating, we would expect to see it on surveys that use live interviewers, but in this case, the lack of an interviewer seems to work in Obama's favor.
