We had some audio issues and Gov. Romney's mike wasn't working momentarily. Simple as that," MSNBC VP for Communications Jeremy Gaines said in a one-line e-mail response to questions about overheard whisper.

But Gaines didn't explain where the whisper came from, or who made it. Even more mysterious a piece about the whisper at the MSNBC site has apparently been removed.

Others have suggested that it was someone off-camera whispering to Russert to finish the question "that without the raising taxes component made no sense at all."

Romney's campaign has so far not respond to requests for comment.

Gordon Brown Sunday issued a bleak assessment of the world economy as he braces Britain for a year of belt tightening in the wake of the credit crunch.

In a strong warning, which sets the backdrop for a campaign to revive his premiership, Brown tells Britain to prepare for "global financial turbulence" in 2008. "Our strong economy is the foundation," Brown wrote in his new year message. "With unbending determination in 2008, we will steer a course of stability through global financial turbulence. The global credit problem that started in America is now the most immediate challenge for every economy."

Brown's sober analysis comes in the wake of the autumn credit crunch that caused the first run on a British bank in more than a century after the Bank of England bailed out Northern Rock.

Excitement for Obama candidacy palpable among many black residents

A win for Obama, the first viable African-American presidential candidate in history, could bode well for him in other states with sizable black populations.

In the state that was first to secede from the Union before the Civil War and that still flies the Confederate flag in front of its State House, excitement about Obama among African-American voters was palpable.

Cynthia Cook, 58, a retired nurse, was beaming as she left an adult education center in downtown Columbia after casting her vote for Obama. "I lived through the civil rights era, and he is a dream come true," she said.

Andre Young, a 36-year-old chef from Columbia, started out a Clinton supporter, but after he saw Obama speak at a massive rally with Oprah Winfrey in December, he changed his mind.

Romney pins Republican campaign hopes on business experience

I am surprised that this has not happened before. I, too, think of Obama as young, but not because of his age. He does not seem to be knowledable about some issues and he really has not had a lot of experience. In my mind, Clinton and Edwards have a better grasp on the problems our courtry has and their ideas in how to improve our country are more realistic. In my reality, by now, I would have reached across and just jack slapped Obama. I was born and raised in the coalfields of WV and people used to say that. Living in VA these past 14 years has really been different. I love my country and I want it to prosper, but for the last 8 years, it truly hasn't. I had a 7th grade history & math teacher who taught me something VERY IMPORTANT at an early age. You don't vote for the party, you vote for who you believe to be the better candidate.
