DETAILS OF THE DEAL

I do not understand, and cannot accept, the resistance of President Bush and Republican leaders to including an extension of unemployment benefits for those who are without work through no fault of their own, Rep. Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y., the Ways and Means Committee chairman, said in a statement.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the Finance Committee Chairman, said leaving out the unemployment extension was a mistake, as he announced plans to craft a separate stimulus package in the Senate starting next week.

Majority Leader Harry Reid said the goal is to send the package to the White House by Feb. 15 for President Bushs signature. Reid said senators would want to look at add-ons including the unemployment extension and possibly money for highway projects.

Bush has supported larger rebates of $800-$1,600, but his plan would have left out 30 million working households who earn paychecks but dont make enough to pay income tax, according to calculations by the Urban Institute-Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center.

Michael Pointer: Purdue Q&A

Question: When will the Purdue quarterback actually look off his primary receiver and go through his progressions? From what I saw Saturday, come-heck-or-high-water, Curtis Painter is going to throw to his primary, even if there is a crowd. And, on two of those interceptions, no Boiler receiver was in the area. I haven't seen anyone say that a receiver zigged when he should have zagged. Were those interceptions all on Painter? Quotes from coaches and Painter seem to suggest so. (Mike from Kokomo)

Answer: Mike, I have covered four quarterbacks since I've been on the Purdue beat: Brandon Hance, Kyle Orton, Brandon Kirsch and Painter. (I missed having the pleasure of covering Drew Brees.) I heard that complaint about everyone of them, including Orton, who had 31 touchdown passes and just five interceptions as a starter.

Holiday is over for Rudy Giuliani as he battles to stay afloat in ...

He continued to hold formidable poll leads in Florida and in the biggest Super Tuesday prizes of California and his home state of New York. He defied political gravity by maintaining a lead in the Republican national polls, a remarkable achievement for a thrice-married, proabortion, pro-gun control defender of gay rights. His record in cutting crime rates in New York drastically, his impressive performance after the September 11 terror attacks, his ultra-hawkish foreign policy approach — and his argument that he was the most electable Republican — helped to appease many conservatives.

Then the political world descended on Iowa and New Hampshire and Mr Giuliani sank from view quicker than an Everglades alligator. He also underestimated just how severely the early state voters would punish him for the heresy of ignoring them.

Ferrous Metallurgy 1991-2000

Alpha-Bank suffers a blow: instead of Alpha-Group employee Boris Kabak, the court appoints an employee of Kuzbassprombank, Andrey Voronin, as a manager. Messrs. Kabak and Voronin will steadily try to displace each other through the courts until Alpha leaves the factory.

On July 3 in Moscow, an attempt on the life of the vice-governor of the Kemerovo region, Dmitry Chirakadze, is made. Two versions exist: the conflict between MIKOM and the management of KMK and the conflict between Alpha and Zapsib (Mr. Chirakadze, previously a partner of Mikhail Zhivilo, was chairman of the board of Zapsib's creditors).

That very day, Inkombank, with the support of TWG, dismisses the head of Magnitka, Anatoly Starikov. The chairman of Magnitka's board of directors, Rashid Sharipov, offers to appoint Victor Rashnikov in his place.
